Located 70 km southwest of Salzburg, at one end of the pedestrian center, 600 m from the Zeller Bergbahn ski lift, this evocative hotel is set on a promontory between the village center and the lake. A small railway crossing provides a prosaic entrance into a front parking lot crammed with cars.
Sliding-glass doors open to a landing that hovers between the reception area below and an inviting bar above. The lobby shines with marble floors, original art and traditional furnishings.
The restaurant, Kaiserstubel, has its own wine cellar and serves tasty regional cuisine in three dining rooms, the farthest reserved for single guests and families with children. A notable menu of vegetarian entrees is especially popular. After dinner, guests retire to the Imperial Bar upstairs, where a variety of seating arrangements provide either conviviality or privacy, and an extensive wine list is accompanied by an informed sommelier. A fireplace invokes coziness unexpected in a hotel this formal, and windows offer lake and mountain views all around. In summer, seating extends out onto the terrace.

The glassed-in pool, flanked by pillars and affording lake views in three directions, complements the solarium, squash court, gym, range of aromatic saunas and massage. A small landing, small docks, an intimate beach and watersports are offered during the summer months. Active guests can rent bikes for individualized pursuits.
Conference facilities are offered for groups of up to 300 with the expected business services in tow, including a lobby-level computer. The best venue for receptions is the lakeside terrace.

Accommodations are in two buildings, the long lakeside main building and a second, smaller house. All vary in design and size, but all are attractively contemporary with light wood appointments, sofa beds, good lighting, phones, TVs and minibars. The marble baths are fitted with dual basins, stall showers and WCs, but most singles are without tubs. The split-level suites are the best choices here, especially those with whirlpools, saunas and fireplaces. The newest rooms are those in the annex, which were undergoing renovations at inspection.
Pets are permitted, but their accompanying guests must pay a daily cleaning surcharge. Room service delivers during meal hours only. Although it lacks the extensive heath facilities of the Salzburger, the Grand's lakeside position makes it the better choice. Skiers appreciate the decent rates and the less-than-lengthy walk.
