About the Golf Club
The course, being on forest land, is a public one. It is laid out over the old hunting grounds of King Henry VIII and Queen Elizabeth I; where the infamous highwayman Dick Turpin roamed in the 1730's and where golf was first played in Essex on an officially recognised course in 1888.
The club has a close and friendly relationship with the City of London which administers the course. It is also the only Golf Club in Essex with the Royal Title.
The course may appear innocuous from the clubhouse but don't be fooled. Rising up and down three times from Chingford Plain into and out of Epping Forest, the course will provide a varied and interesting challenge of your skills.
With only three Par 3s and two Par 5s (three for the Ladies), the course is not long by today's standards. However anyone playing to their handicap here will have done well. and anyone who pars all three of the Par 3s will have done exceptionally well indeed!
To preserve the natural appearnace of the landscape, bunkers are only to be found away from the passing public gaze, on the upper holes, in the forest.
The 471 yard Par 4 finishing hole (Ladies par 5) to a green protected by water is a tough closing hole for anyone but the lower handicap player.

Played course first thing in the morning after a heavy night of rain. Course is in fantastic condition with the greens in particular running true. They would be even better if golfers repaired their pitchmarks. A good variation of holes, cutting through the forest for part of the round and then opening up on the flats
