Despite the name always invoking unwanted memories of the 1973 FA Cup Final Sunderland is one of the cornerstone brand names when it comes to weather-specific golf apparel (and at least they have the courtesy of sticking the  'of Scotland' bit on the end, to soften the blow).

It's no surprise that Sunderland understands the needs of golfers as it's been around for the best part of 80 years, but the recent wave of new entries and familiar names tapping into the weatherproof clothing market has been a challenge that Sunderland has risen to with íts latest launch, Whisperdry rainwear.

It´s one of those 'where have you been all my life' moments. Although the general standard (and style) of rainwear has improved considerably over the past five years, surely there isn´t a golfer alive who actually likes the accompanying scrunch noise that their jacket or trousers makes as they attempt to combat the pouring rain with a devilish array of slices and four-putts. That's where Whisperdry comes in.

The science bit is as follows: Whisperdry is designed with four-way stretch whisperdry fabric. The sealed seam construction guarantees a totally waterproof garment, the knitted tricot comfort lining provides warmth, while other key features include: a water-repellent front zip and hand warmer zipped pockets, droptail hem with twin shock cord adjustment, half elasticated comfort cuffs with Velcro tab adjusters and an internal pocket.

In short, it does everything you need from a weatherproof jacket. And it looks the part.

The Sunderland Whisperdry jacket is available in sizes S-XXXL and in Black/Red and Black/Blue colour options, with an RRP of £150. Trousers come in three leg lengths, 29inch, 31 inch and 33 inch, and waist sizes S-XXXL, with an RRP of £100.
