MONTY 12/1 FOR 2012 RYDER CUP CAPTAINCY

Colin Montgomerie is 12/1 to captain Europe in the 2012 Ryder Cup following his 2010 appointment today.

Monty the new captain

Bookies Paddy Power are betting on Europe’s future appointment and with Monty taking charge in 2010 the path now looks clear for his main challenger Jose Maria Olazabal to captain Europe’s challenge in 2012. The Spaniard is just 2/5 for the 2012 honour with Sandy Lyle his nearest rival at 7/1.

However with the 2012 captaincy not named today as some expected, should Montgomerie win in 2010 his reappointment could prove irresistible two years later.

Darren Haines, spokesman for the bookie, said: “The 2012 betting market looks once sided at the moment but should Monty regain the coveted trophy from the Americans next summer the clamour for his retention could prove too much of a lure for officials and the man himself.”

With an illustrious history on the European Tour Monty is also 7/1 to meet the automatic qualifying criteria for the 2010 team even though the Scot has said there is no chance he will play in the team no matter how many qualifying points he accrues as a player.

The Monty Factor makes Europe 5/6 favourites to win The Ryder Cup back from America when they meet at Celtic Manor in 2010.
