All perfectly poised for an excellent weekend's golf

Tiger Woods

World number one Tiger Woods appears to finally be putting his personal problems to one side as he took command of round one of The Barclays – the first event of the US Tour’s FedEx Cup.

He fired a six-under 65 to lead by a shot in New Jersey alongside Vaughn Taylor. Woods’ odds for victory this weekend have since been slashed to 5/2 as he shows signs of form that may worry the European Ryder Cup team ahead of that contest at Celtic Manor in Wales.

Rory McIlroy, at three-under, is Ladbrokes’ second favourite way back at 12/1 but European hopefuls Paul Casey (33/1) and Padraig Harrington (25/1) – who are both relying on wildcard entries – are poised at two under and with their Ryder Cup places to play for, they may offer great competition for the win.

Australian Adam Scott is five-under and at 16/1 may be worth a punt.

On the European Tour, this weekend sees the Johnnie Walker Championship at Gleneagles and with the like of Casey, Harrington, Luke Donald and Justin Rose all away at the FedEx Cup, there are some great bets to be had here.

Ross Fisher, currently tied for first on -7, is the bookies’ favourite at 4/1 with Italian Francesco Molinari, on -6, at 7/1. Leader Gary Boyd, currently at eight-under is back at 16s. A good outside bet may be Miguel Angel Jimenez who is poised at two-under after his first round. He’s at 25/1 and needs a good performance to guarantee his spot in the European Ryder Cup team.

If you fancy a bet on a complete outsider, try South African George Coetzee who is at minus four currently with odds of 66/1. He shot 69 in the first round and birdied the first to be just four back from the leader.
