Aussie Appleby storms to Masters win

Tiger Woods showed signs of improvement with a fourth place finish at the Australian Masters but it was Stuart Appleby who claimed the win from Adam Bland.Aussie Appleby, who finished 10 under, celebrated what was his first win on home soil since the 2001 Australian Open with a birdie-birdie finish to pip Bland by one. And what makes his victory even more incredible is that he came from seven shots behind leader Bland and only hit the front with birdie at the 17th. He shot a joint best of the day 65 whilst Bland finished with a two-over par 73.This was Appleby’s second incredible finish to a tournament in 2010 after he had previously carded a closing round 11-under 59 to claim the USPGA’s Greenbrier Classic in August.Woods, on the other hand, must have been roused by his closing round performance following another frustrating week on the greens. His fourth round 65 will give him renewed confidence in his attempt to break his winning drought and challenge for the world’s top spot once more. It’s no secret that Woods has struggled to find his top form following a break from the sport amid allegations surrounding his private life that led to divorce from Elin Nordegren. He has, at times, showed signs of finding his swing but too often his putter has been poor during 2010.He now takes two weeks off before next month’s final tournament in California – the Chevron World Challenge. He’s acknowledged his improvement at the Australian Masters saying: “Some of the things I am working on are starting to gel but unfortunately not for the entire round, they are sporadic. So I’ll do some more work when I get back home.”
