Will Monty Earns his Knighthood?

Will Montgomerie earn his place amongst sporting elite this weekend

Colin Montgomerie

Monty. Love him or find him a little annoying there is no doubting his ability to attract our attentions. As captain of the victorious Ryder Cup team he also won many of his former critics over  - leading us to victory over the Americans with a mixture of tough talking and, at times, inspired team selection.

The question on everybodies lips this weekend of course is ‘will he triumph in the sun or wilt in the face of a very beatable team’?

There is a lot at stake for the outspoken Scot. Victory in Thailand could guarantee him a knighthood and a place amongst the UK’s sporting elite. And while the competition this week may leave a lot to be desired we should not underestimate the Asian side now.

They are full of confidence and are certainly on the up. With a number of major Tour winners ready and very much up for taking the scalps of Europe’s ‘untouchables’.

For Monty it means he is putting much on the line to beat a team that he is expected to trounce. Win and he wins very little. Fail and chances are he won’t be kneeling in front of a Monarch any time soon.

And after losing to the Asian side last year the tie has got a whole load more edgy too and with Monty a playing captain this time around he needs to perform on all fronts.

The fifth edition of the team contest will take place at Black Mountain Golf Club in Thailand, with Europe looking for a fourth victory.

None of the victorious Ryder Cup team will compete in Thailand, although vice-captain Thomas Bjorn and assistant Rhys Davies will be reunited with Montgomerie, who can also call upon the services of Swedish trio Henrik Stenson, Peter Hanson and Johan Edfors, Italian prodigy Matteo Manassero and Spain's Pablo Martin.

Ozaki is a non-playing captain of the Asian team, which features teenage star Ryo Ishikawa, Thailand's Thongchai Jaidee and India's Jeev Milkha Singh.
