Westwood's coach wins top award

Coach of the Year accolade for world number one's coach

Peter Cowen

Lee Westwood’s rise to being the best golfer in the world hasn’t been achieved by just his own hard work and dedication. No, it’s been down to a team around him that have helped get the best out of the Nottinghamshire star and one of the key players in this team has been recognised with an extremely prestigious award.
Coach Peter Cowen, first team up with Westwood between 1995 and 2000 by which time the star had reached fourth in the world but after parting company Westwood slumped to 266th in the world ranking but has enjoyed a remarkable return to form since joining forces with Cowen again in 2008.
It is this work that has seen Cowen credited with helping Westwood become the best golfer in the world this year.
And it is for this work that he has been awarded the UK Coach of the Year at the 2010 UK Coaching Awards in London. Cowen, based in Yorkshire, also took the high-performance award.
As well as working with Westwood, Cowen has also coached a number of other top golfers and is currently working with US Open winner and Race to Dubai runner-up, Graeme McDowell as well as Open winner Louis Oosthuizen.
It’s fantastic that the people behind the scenes are recognised at such ceremonies and Cowen certainly deserves this accolade after his remarkable work with Westwood.
There is no doubt that Westwood has an unbelievable amount of natural golfing talent, but now Cowen is bringing the best out of him and helping the 37-year-old fulfil his potential. His next major task will be to coach Westwood to a Major Championship success but if he continues to play and progress how he is, then next year may well be his year.
A big congratulations to Cowen and let’s hope the pair continue their relationship and British golf continues to boasts the world’s best player.
