Westwood misses cut for first time in over a year

Kaymer closes gap at top of world rankings

Lee Westwood is showing signs of poor form at the start of this season after missing a cut for the first time in over a year. And this disappointing display at the Qatar Masters over the weekend has allowed Martin Kaymer to close the gap at the top of the world rankings and he is now in striking distance of taking over as the world number one.
Kaymer has been in stirring form so far this season and he will be disappointed with his 28th place finished at this event but it will be Westwood, a keen Nottingham Forest fan, who will have to take a closer look at his game as the season gathers pace.
The Worksop player has been sensational over the past two years and tightly deserves to be top of the world pile but if he continues to struggle as he has in Doha, then his reign at the top may be short lived.
His four over par score for the first two rounds could be signs of early season rust but with the first major just over two months away, he will need to find that scintillating form that has seen his stock rise so dramatically over the past 18 months.
I hope it is a case of early season rust as I would love to see Westwood win a major this year, an achievement he has been working towards for so long. He deserves to after the run he’s had in the biggest championships over the past two seasons.
A big step towards being successful is recognising when you are struggling or things aren’t quite right and to his credit he has done just this, telling the BBC: “I’m going down to Dubai to get on to the practice range and try to get some kind of rhythm back in my game.”
And he can take some solace from the other big names who struggle as the wind blew forcefully at times. Henrik Stenson on plus six, Paul Casey on plus five and Ross Fisher on plus four also failed to make the cut.
