USPGA shaping up nicely

Poulter worth a punt for major crown

Day one co-leader Bubba Watson

There’s only one competition going on this weekend that golfing enthusiasts are going to be concerned with and that’s the final major of the year, the USPGA Championships at Whistling Straits in Wisconsin.

And the overnight leaderboard from the first day suggests this could be a close and fantastic contest that goes down to the wire.

Following the first round, American Bubba Watson and Italian Francesco Molinari shared the clubhouse lead on four under with Ernie Els and Matt Kuchar perfectly placed on four under and still to complete their round after bad light ended play. Darren Clarke, on three under, was left in a similar situation.

On Tiger-watch, the World Number One shot an opening round one under 71 to remain menacingly within touching distance of the leading pack with Rory McIllroy and Phil Mickelson also on one under with holes still to complete.

So if you’refancying a punt this weekend, get your bets placed early as the odds are still quite long for the main contenders.

Ladbrokes are giving you 9/1 for Woods to win outright with Big Ernie at 10s, Mickelson and McIllroy at 12s and Kuchar and Nick Watney at 14s. Also worth a shot is Watson at 25/1 while in-form Justin Rose is at 40/1 and my tip, although this is along shot, is Ian Poulter at 80/1. ‘Poults’ has the arsenal to produce something special and could be a dark horse. Not a bad each way flutter in my eyes.

Elsewhere, William Hill has similar odds but with Mickelson at 14/1 and Watney at 16s.Take a look at Coral for your outsider bets. Rose is at 50/1 on here and Poulter is 100/1.

Remember to gamble responsibly and enjoy the golf!

Other events this weekend include the European Challenge Tour: Rolex Trophy, Golf Club de Geneve, Geneva, Switzerland; the Canadian Tour: Jane Rogers Championship, Greystone Golf Club, Milton, Ontario, Canada; the Ladies European Tour: S4C Wales Ladies Championship of Europe, Wales; and the USPGA Nationwide Tour: Price Cutter Charity Championship Presented by Dr Pepper, Highland Springs CC, Springfield, Missouri, United States.
