Preparations for the President’s Cup, a fantastic team event held every two years, are well under way and already United States captain, Fred Couples, is making plans.
Legendary golfer, Couples, this week confirmed he will be calling on Jay Haas and NBA legend Michael Jordan as his assistants at the competition next year. Couples captained the US to victory in the event in San Francisco last year and will lead the team again in the match against the International Team in Melbourne.
Couples said: “Jay and Michael were instrumental in the US team’s success in 2009 and I knew as soon as I was asked to be captain again that I would need them both by my side to keep things running smoothly and ensure we have the best chance at retaining the cup when we get to Melbourne. Jay has been one of my closest friends in golf for many years and I really respect his instincts and leadership qualities.
“Michael is, of course, one of the greatest athletes of all time, and to have a champion like him in the cabin to help motivate and inspire the team is such a tremendous asset.”
The International Team, captained by Greg Norman, lost out 19.5 to 14.5 last time and they will be looking to rectify that next time out.
The current standings for the teams sees the American side consist of Matt Kuchar, Steve Stricker, Jim Furyk, Phil Mickelson, Dustin Johnson, Tiger Woods, Heath Slocum, Hunter Mahan, Bo Van Pelt and Jeff Overton. The International team currently consists of Ernie Else, Retief Goosen, Adam Scott, Robert Allenby, Louis Oosthuizen, Kim X. Kyung-tae, Camilo Villegas, Jason Day, Tim Clark and Charl Schwartzel.
