Well it’s here and it’s in full swing – yes my fellow golf fans it’s The Masters, golf’s most illustrious competition in golf’s calendar.
Yes, the glory of Augusta National is being celebrated by the appearance of the world’s best players and it looks like we could see a new name on the trophy as the second round draws to a close. But then again, this course has delivered one or two almighty blows to those in the driving seat in previous years, so I wouldn’t be shocked to see a late charge up the leaderboard during Sunday’s final round.
At present, Europe’s great hopes lay with the talented Northern Irishman, Rory McIlroy, who, after 23 holes has tamed the beast. He sits on nine under, one ahead of KJ Choi in second and four ahead of YE Yang, Ricky Barnes, Fred Couples, Geoff Ogilvy and Alvaro Quiros in tied third.
McIlroy shot a stunning 65 on the opening day and has seen his odds slashed to 3/1 with Choi at sevens and Phil Mickelson, back on two under at 8/1. Tiger Woods, the pre-tournament favourite is now at 14/1 whilst world number two Lee Westwood is back at 25/1.
If you fancy a punt on world number one Martin Kaymer, way back on plus five after a devastating opening 78, then you can get him at 250/1 with A cheeky small bet on him may end up rewarding as he is the type of player that is capable of putting a run together and getting back in the mix, although it will take something special now.
My wildcard tip is Sergio Garcia who is finally starting to recapture the form that shot him to prominence all those years ago. After a short break from the sport, he has come back strongly and at 33/1 and sitting on three under after the first round, he could be well worth a shot.
One thing for sure is that this competition always brings us some fantastic entertainment and this year is already proving now different. Keep watching and let us know who you’ve backed for the win.
