McDowell showing great form ahead of Ryder Cup

Lara saves Tour card with Austrian Open victory

Jose Manuel Lara

Did you listen to me and back Graeme McDowell to win the Austrian Open at the weekend? Or did you decide that tips from other people were probably better for your wallet?
Well, although he didn’t take the title, he did finish joint third on -14 and that, as predictions go, isn’t too shabby for me! Fourteen under for his four rounds is cracking form considering he’s just had four weeks away from the game to rest and recuperate before the Ryder Cup at Celtic Manor in two weeks time. I think it’s encouraging that one of our finest players is showing such form.
Also, hats off to Miguel Angel Jiminez for his nine under – another encouraging sign ahead of the team showpiece from October 1-3.
But the biggest congratulations has to go to the winner, Spaniard Jose Manuel Lara. The 33-year-old has saved his European Tour card with this win. And the best part was that it came completely out of the blue!
Before his fourth place finish at the KLM Open last week, Lara missed nine successive cuts. He beat David Lynn in a play-off yesterday to take the winner’s cheque of £104,000. Lara posted a final round 64, including 10 birdies, for an eight under round to move from eighth overnight to joint leader. And when Lynn made a mess of his tee shot at the first extra hole, Lara swooped to claim the victory.
On the Ladies’ Tour, Britain’s Laura Davies shot a final round 71 to win the Open de Espana and secure her 76th career title.
The in-form 46-year-old finished on 11 under par to seal a two-stroke win from compatriot Rebecca Hudson, Australian Fraces Bondad and Christina Kim from the US.
And this win leaves Davies on course to top the European money list for an eighth time. Well done Laura.
