McDowell and Kaymer share award

European Tour Golfer of the Year shared for first time in 26 years

Whilst the PGA Tour played it’s games and failed to recognise the best achievers over the past year, the European Tour got its top award spot on.
It awarded Graeme McDowell and Martin Kaymer the joint 2010 European Tour Golfer of the Year - the perfect way to reflect what has happened in Europe this season. They could easily have thrown Lee Westwood into the mix too, given that he took over as they world’s number one, however, the destination of this prestigious award has been chosen correctly by the voting panel of writers and commentators. It was the first time in the award’s 26-year history that it has been shared.
By recognising both McDowell and Kaymer’s achievements over the past 12 months, the European Tour has sent out a statement of just how strong the field is in Europe at present.
The pair both won their first major title in 2010, McDowell taking the US Open and Kaymer winning the USPGA Championship, whilst they also both won four times and were part of Europe’s successful Ryder Cup team.
Northern Ireland’s McDowell also hit the winning putt to beat the US at Celtic Manor whilst Germany’s Kaymer won the ‘Race to Dubai’ money list with the Ulsterman in second. McDowell also moved up to seventh in the world rankings with Sunday’s play-off win against Tigers Woods in the Chevron World Challenge whilst Kaymer has been threatening to take over the top spot following an incredible year on the golfing circuit.
Both these players have been incredible this season and the strength of the European Tour is now incredible. It is starting to rival the US version and don’t be surprised if we see several European winners around the world next year.
The likes of McDowell, Kaymer, Westwood, Ian Poulter and Rory McIlroy are part of a golden generation of players and they will be even hungrier for success in 2011. I, for one, cannot wait to see what happens next season.
