Masters odds reveal shock favourite

Woods and Mickelson lead bookies' thoughts for first major

Tiger Woods - will he be wearing the green jacket again in April?

In just under four weeks time, the first golf major of the season will be in full swing and there is a shock name at the top of the bookies’ thoughts to win it.
The Masters at Augusta National is probably the most difficult and the most prestigious major for professional golfers to win. So when the latest odds were checked, it was a big surprise to see a certain Mr Tiger Woods as the favourite for the outright win at 7/1 closely followed by another player struggling for top form, Phil Mickelson on 8/1.
Admittedly, this calibre of golfer can turn it on when they wish to but these two have been so out of sorts that I don’t even think that they will challenge let alone go on to win the competition.
Augusta will play long again this year. It will play hard. And it won’t take any prisoners. And the way Woods has been putting and the way that Lefty has been struggling from distance, there just doesn’t seem to be a place for them at the top of this list.
For me it will be won by a European who wins for the first time since Jose Maria OIazabal triumphed in 1999. Admittedly Woods and Mickelson have dominated over the past decade with six titles - three each - and it has been a happy hunting ground but that was when they reigned supreme. And Woods hasn’t won in it five years so why is there a chance that he will now when he’s being playing the worst golf of his career?
So, I can sense you thinking, who does he think will win it? Well My money would be on Martin. Kaymer at 12/1 or either Graeme McDowell or Luke Donald who are both at 25/1.
The only Americans I can see really challenging is Matt Kuchar who has shown signs of being an extremely accomplished player over the past 12 months, and Bubba Watson who is completely unpredictable at times. His major plus is that he is one of the longest drivers of the ball in the game and on a course where length can be so important, that may make him a force to be reckoned with.
For now though, I count down the days until the first tee off on April 7th.
