Ian Poulter

Ian Poulter’s majestic, inspiring performance at the Hong Kong Open, a performance that underlined his immense quality, showcased exactly why European Tour golf fans want him to choose this Tour over the USPGA Tour. The Englishman is currently undecided where he will play next season after amendments to Tour schedules, but all fans will be hoping he stays on this side of the pond and continues to focus on helping European golf compete with the mega-bucks version in the States.Poulter was simple brilliant in Hong Kong this weekend. His 22 under performance included a stunning, career-best 10 under 60 in the second round to give him the halfway lead and he managed to hold onto this with a final round 67 seeing off Simon Dyson and Matteo Manassero in joint second. Anthony Kang was fourth on 20 under whilst Northern Irishman Graeme McDowell was fifth on -19.But it was Poulter who shone to take his second title of the year. He played some magnificent golf over the four days and European fans will be hoping that this success and his challenge at the Singapore Open will be enough to convince him that his future lies here. His win in Hong Kong thrust him back into the world’s top 10 and was his 10th win on the European Tour. And he is now confident he can climb even higher in the world rankings – but after causing a stir two years ago by insisting he was the only serious challenger when at his best to Tiger Woods, then world number one, Poulter will know that he can’t get carried away like that again this time. There is no doubt he has the talent and the confidence to be world number one, but he will need to produce the kind of form he did in Hong Kong on a regular basis. Let’s hope we see more of it here in Europe next year.
