Experience will prove invaluable for McIlroy

Ulsterman will fulfil his massive potential sooner rather than later

Rory McIlroy

Golf is a funny old game. One minute you’re flying high and nothing and nobody can stop you and the next you’re at rock bottom and can’t hole anything from anywhere.
And that’s all that happened to Rory McIlroy yesterday at the Masters. Yes he was bad and a lot of his mistakes stemmed from the challenge of leading a major from the front in the final round but in truth, he was unfortunate as much as he was terrible.
In fact, had fortune been shining on him, I believe he would have won the green jacket, even with level of erratic play he displayed at times. Think of his round. He was aggressive from the off and was still leading at the turn but look what happened when it did go wrong.
Augusta is notorious for hurting you when it’s not quite going right and this happened to the 21-year-old Northern Irishman. He attacked from the tee but saw his ball ricochet into the cabins where no other player had been before when he was just two yards from hitting the perfect drive. He was inches from the perfect approach later on but saw his ball kick on and run through the back leaving him an awkward chip that he fluffed, He missed several putts that lipped out when they appeared to be going in and from here it was only ever going to be downhill.
For McIlroy, he needs to take on board everything he will undoubtedly have learned from this experience and take it forward into future majors.
I don’t have any concerns over his mental toughness following this and I actually think the whole experience will make him stronger. He will learn and he will not let it happen again next time he’s in this position.
And there will be a next time. McIlroy is too talented to fail to get into this position in the future and I honestly believe there’s not a chance he will end up the same as Sergio Garcia – a player of huge potential and that’s it.
Now, it’s up to McIlroy to prove me right.
