Ernie back to his best

Els takes South African open by one

Ernie Els

‘Big Ern’ is back! Ernie Els, the great three-time major winner, long considered one of the best in the world until a recent dip in form, produced a stunning performance at the South African Open to win by one shot from fellow countryman Retief Goosen.
In an event dominated by home players, Els showed his class and that he is rediscovering some of the form that made him such a deadly opponent for so many years. For me, he was always up there with the likes of Tiger Woods, Phil Mickelson and Vijay Singh and now he will be hoping to catch the likes of Lee Westwood and Martin Kaymer.
The 41-year-old, who dominated the World Matchplay event at Wentworth for years, fired a 25-under round to confirm the win.
This was his third win of 2010 after a torrid few years that saw him fall down the world rankings dramatically. He is now back up to 12th and showing signs that he is ready to take on the best in the business again.
Els is without doubt one of the most successful golfers of his generation. Since turning pro in 1989, he was won two US Opens and an Open Championship as well as a record seven World Matchplay titles. His really is one of golf’s truly global players and one of it’s most successful too. This latest win makes it a career total of 68.
2010 has been a fantastic year for the big man. He is popular amongst players and fans and everyone loves to see him doing well. It wouldn’t surprise me if he kicked on in 2011 and challenged for the majors as he now has rediscovered the swing that has been the envy of those around him.
His swing is beautiful, and one of the best on the PGA Tour. It is admired by fans and players alike for it’s gracefulness, it’s elegance and it’s effortlessness. It’s one of the greatest ever.
It’s fantastic to see Ernie back to his best and I hope he has a 2011 that’s a productive as 2010 has been for him. Well done Ern.
