Darren Clarke to Fight for his Golfing Life in 2011

Can he Win Back the Crowd's Roar in Africa?

Darren Clarke Aims High in Africa

He’s known for wearing his heart on his sleeve and for Darren Clarke 2011 really is his ‘do or die’ year in golf.

By his own standards the jovial, likeable Irishman had a lacklustre 2010 and the next 12 months really is all about refinding the form that made him a cult hero amongst golfers the world over.

And his quest to win begins this week in the Africa Open. And that unmistakable ‘Roar’ that is associated with Clarkey and his army of followers following any of his countless stellar performances of old could well return to the course in more ways than one

The 42-year-old is part of a strong field assembled in East London, with high-profile South African trio Charl Schwartzel, who is the defending champion, Louis Oosthuizen and Retief Goosen also competing for the £132,989 top prize.

The Northern Irishman is hoping that the co-sanctioned European and Sunshine Tour event will bring with it a change of luck and he said: "It's been two years since I won but I am determined to break back and I hope the Africa Open will give me the kind of kick start it did in 2009."

In that year, despite not performing to the standards you would expect of his high standards beforehand, he went on one of the best runs of his career. That, he hopes, will be how 2011 begins.

"It's always great to start the season with a solid result and I'm looking forward to getting on the right track in East London."

His reference to 2009 coincides with his second-place finish that year after pushing eventual winner Goosen all the way over the closing holes when the tournament was not yet part of the European Tour.

Here’s hoping he does the very same this year. Imagine golf will be backing him all the way that’s for sure!
