Cornwall puts itself on the golfing radar

St Mellion leads the way for Cornish golf

St Mellion International Golf Resort

The standard of golf course is constantly improving throughout the UK as the sport continues to grow and an area of the country where the game is starting to flourish, with one stand out course, is Cornwall.
The popular holidaying destination is renowned for its delightful beaches, friendly locals, stunning walks and incredible food – and now one golf resort is hoping to add it’s name to the list of reasons for a visit.
The St Mellion International Resort, in the east of the country near Plymouth and Devon, underwent a massive £20 million refurbishment in 2009 and has since scooped a major award at the 2010 Cornwall Tourism Awards presented by the Cornwall Development Company.
St Mellion won a silver in the pretigious ‘Large Hotel of the Year’ category and this is the first award the venue has won since the makeover. The ceremony was hosted at the resort itself.
The resort’s hotel isn’t the only thing that should get you excited though. The world famous Nicklaus Signature Course is rated as one of the top 100 in Great Britain and Ireland by Golf World magazine and for anyone who hasn’t played there, I thoroughly recommend a visit. The course is a delight and although it can be a struggle for the high handicappers out there, the experience of playing on a course of its standard is worth the green fee and the extra shots you may take.
In other news that you may not be aware of, Crown Golf has donated its largest ever amount to back up its commitment to junior golf development with a £24,000 donation from its members to the Golf Foundation.
I think it’s fantastic that the group has donated this amazing amount of money. We need to encourage youngsters into the sport and this money will no doubt help the Foundation develop some new initiatives to get the youth of today onto the golf courses around the country.
We need to encourage large organisations that are involved with this great sport to give back more often and hats off have to go to Crown Golf for leading the way with such things.
