Casey is back!

Englishman Paul Casey ends drought with Bahrain triumph

Posted Feb 01, 2011 by Jeff Dawson

It was brilliant to see Paul Casey end his 20-month drought and win the European Tour’s Golf Champion tournament this weekend with an absolutely stunning performance.
Casey, who I had backed to be included in the Ryder Cup before he was left out, has been one of the most consistent English golfers over the past few seasons, despite this lengthy winless streak.
Now ranked sixth in the world, Casey has quietly been racking up for the past few seasons since his last win at the PGA Championship at Wentworth in 2009. He sits just behind Graeme McDowell in fifth and Phil Mickelson in fourth, the latter coming second in Torrey Pines at the Farmers Insurance Open behind Bubba Watson.
Back in Bahrain, Casey was steady in the closing round, finishing on -20 overall to beat playing partner Peter Hanson by one on the last hole.
The Englishman’s performance was superb from the very first day, and in difficult conditions on the back nine on Sunday he displayed exactly why he will be a force in the majors this season.
He admitted to the BBC: “It is one of the toughest battles I’ve ever had. It feels fantastic – the most important thing to me is winning and that was huge. The goal is obviously the majors, but how are you going to win major championships if you can’t win regular events?”
A very good question indeed, and the answer is simply you can’t. This win will do no end for his confidence and expect to see Casey challenging for honours through this season.
He is going to be my tip, along with Lee Westwood, Martin Kaymer and Graeme McDowell, to win a major this year and I thoroughly expect the Americans to be looking on enviously as Europe’s best continue to get better.
