2011 - The Year of UK Golf?

Will our stars take over the world top 10 of capitulate?

Posted Jan 18, 2011 by Jeff Dawson

Had you woken up from a ten year coma and been told that the world golf ranking are dominated by UK golfers such as Lee Westwood and Ian Poulter said person would most probably have rubbed their eyes and checked their pulse. Quite frankly, such a position would have been quite unbelievable.

See, back then (and yes 2001 was TEN years ago now) we had precisely….zero golfers in the top ten. But fast forward from 2001 to 2011 and the reality is that no other ‘country’ has more players in those top spots than us. And we should all feel pretty smug as a result.

So what has been the ‘cause’ of such a rise to prominence? Clearly some damn fine golf by the likes of Westy, Poults, McDowell and Co is mostly to blame but we must also consider the capitulation of some of our finer global stars also.

Tiger’s fall from grace has been far too well documented, Phil Mickelson has been rightly concerned more about his wife’s health, David Duval has just disappeared and several other stars seem to have found more time for their yachts than the practice ground.

Meanwhile the Brits have been working harder than ever on gaining that ‘winning mentality’, employing the best psychologists, swing coaches and masseuses money can buy. And it seems to be paying off. Such dedication to fitness of body and mind is separating them from the former stars of the top ten.

Our concern, of course, is that that same complacency may now affect our stars so 2011 could just as easily be the year of their downfall as easily as it could be the year of their making….time will tell.
