Ryder Cup stars ready for European Masters

New World Number 1 could be in place after this weekend

After the drama of last week’s European Ryder Cup qualification at the Johnny Walker Championship at Glenagles, this weekend has a bit more of a relaxed feel about it.

There is, however, the small matter of the European Masters to contend with the likes of selected Ryder Cup stars Miguel Angel Jiminez and Edoardo Molinari competing at Crans-sur-Sierre in Switzerland. I expect both of these to be in the top ten of this competition with the likes of Darren Clarke and Paul Lawrie also to challenge.

Over on the US Tour, the Deutsche Bank Championship takes place with lots of big names battling it out at the Boston competition.

Europeans Luke Donald, Ian Poulter, Padriag Harrington and Rory McIlroy will be hoping to post some good scores to lay down a marker to their American counterparts ahead of the coming Ryder Cup. We could also have a new world number one after this event as both Phil Mickelson and Steve Stricker can overtake Tiger Woods at the best in the game.

If Woods finishes outside the top 24, Mickelson will have to finish fourth or better to take the coveted honour of leading the world rankings.

In the women’s game, this weekend sees the Uniqa Ladies Golf Open in Fohrenwald-Wiener Neustadt in Austria. In form Laura Davies will be looking to continue her fine form here following recent wins in New Zealand and Germany. She is already the oldest lady to win on the Tour and will be hoping to extend this with a win here.
