The Front 9

All the golf stuff we've got to look forward to.

AN UNLIKELY STORY
I love Padraig Harrington. There I've said it. After years of self-denial (there's not a lot of romance in backing a former accountant who's grafted his way to the top), his honesty and his fallibility have won me over. Even after a disappointing season, by his very high standards, he's finished at a canter and is the only European with even the vaguest chance of winning The Fed Ex Cup.

CRUNCH TIME
Unavoidable that the economic downturn makes The Front 9, with the announcement that we all knew would happen. The Race To Dubai is no longer the richest reward in golf, after a 25per cent cut in prize money this year.

SPONSORED SLIM
If it's a struggle for the Ladies and Seniors tours, it's no great surprise that sponsorship money is getting harder to attract to the biggest of the lot - The PGA Tour. Sponsors' money and TV revenue are largely responsible for the success of the tour, but PGA Tour commissioner Tim Finchem struck an unusually cautious note in his latest statement regarding the financial health of top-tier golf.

FROM COUNTRY CLUB TO MUNI
OK, this little gem from golf writer Dan Jenkins has been knocking about for a while now, but we might as well have a laugh while we're on the subject of economic crises...

GIVING IT ALL (WELL, SOME OF IT ANYWAY...)
Well, at least PGA Tour golfers are still earning. Heath Slocum is one of many PGA Tour golfers who could smack me in the face with a lob wedge and I'd struggle to pick him in an identity parade. But anybody who's prepared to share the love - Slocum's $40,000 charitable donation is a nice start - is OK with us.

WEB WISE
He might have an ego as big as an African elephant (I only wrote might...), but there are many things to admire about Ian Poulter. Seriously, anyone who can turn pro off four and end up making millions deserves some credit. And his new website is quite clever.

DON'T PANIC!
The whole point of Front 9 is to alert you of future goings on in golf, so put down a diary marker for January 1 2024. Despite the fact that several manufacturers have already launched wedges conforming to the new regulations, the majority of us have 15 years to save up for a new set of Vokeys.

ITALIA MIGHTY
The story of how Eduardo Molinari got his game back on track. The 2005 US Amateur Champion disappeared off The European Tour after just one poor season, but after harvesting more prize money in one season than any other player in Challenge Tour history, he'll be back with the top tier Europeans next season, including his younger brother, Francesco.
