Essential Reading For The Week Ahead In Golf

Posted Jun 10, 2009 by Iestyn George

Bethpage: home of the 2009 US Open.

1. RETURN OF THE MICK.
The PGA Tour turns up at St Jude Classic in Memphis and despite the return of a lighter, brighter John Daly to the the starting line-up after his European Tour adventure, most of the pre-tournament talk is all about Phil Mickelson, who plays his first tournament since his wife Amy was diagnosed with breast cancer. Check out PGATour.com's expert picks here. There's a lot of love out there for David Toms...

2. WHAT HAPPENED TO AUSTRIA?
It's half-term on The European Tour this week, which means there will be dozens of hard-working tour staff released in the community, not knowing what to do with themselves. We advise you to do your civil duty - if you stumble upon any people in chinos and branded polo shirts, stick a walkie-talkie in their hands and keep them amused couple of hours, will you?

3. SAINT OR DINNER?
Forgive the terrible headline - it's a tenuous attempt at drawing attention to the radical transformation that's taken place at St Mellion, one of our favourite corners of Cornwall. The Nicklaus Course hosts European Tour event The St Mellion International in 2011 and the old hotel has been demolished, with a new £20million facility built instead. Check out the St Mellion website.

4. OPEN & SHUT CASE
Players likely to have an extra spring in their step having secured their place in the field for The Open at Turnberry next month via the International Qualifying Final - Rafa Echenique, Graeme Storm, Garry Orr, David Drysdale, Raphael Jaquelin, Paul Broadhurst, Rhys Davies, Richey Ramsay and Oli Fisher. Plenty of big names who fell short this time and will have to go through further nail-biting at regional and local qualifying. Stay in touch here.

5. VIDEO NASTY
Actually, whatever happened to the phrase 'video nasty'. Twenty years ago used to be a staple part of every issue of The Daily Mail. Now? Nothing. Do you still 'video' stuff, even on Sky+ by the way? Anyway, here's a funny golf video...

6. WE ARE NOT IN FASHION. WE ARE FASHION.
Keep your eye out for a radical new player in golf fashion inspired by Victorian turn-of-the-century clothing. Seriously. They're producing a fantastic range to wear on and off the course. You'll have to be patient - the first range might not be out for a year -  but from the sneak preview we got last week you can definitely put us down for a neoprene waistcoat.

7. I'M WITH THE BRAND
Can anyone possibly claim to have created a better 'brand identity' for a golf course than the logo for Bethpage State Park, the municipal course hosting the US Open next week (see here)? By the way, the answer is 'No'.

8. OLD McDONALD CAUSED ALARM...
The McDonald's LPGA Championship gets underway at Bulle Rock this week, with World No2 Yani Tseng defending her title. We're backing Suzann Pettersen for what it's worth, in the knowledge that whatever happens, there's always a photograph of an embarassed-looking winner with Ronald McDonald to look forward to next Monday. Follow the action at LPGA.com.

9. GOLF PUB ARGUMENT FODDER
We love a pub and we like an argument. This list of the 100 UK golf courses to play before you die courtesy of YourGolfTravel.com is tremendous ammunition for a long night and a bad hangover. The distinct Welsh bias, was a particularly contentious element. See the list here.
