The Blue Monster - Did You Know?

It's not a monster, it's a golf course - and it's not blue, either...

Posted Feb 16, 2010 by Iestyn George

Everything you ever wanted to know - and a couple of things you didn't - about the venue for the forthcoming WGC CA Championship.

SWAMP THING: Work started on building The Doral Hotel & Country Club on 2,500 acres on swampland in West Miami in 1959. The name Doral is a combination of the Christian names of owners Doris and Alfred Kaskel. Sweet...

GRAND DESIGN: The Blue Monster was designed by acclaimed course designer Dick Wilson. A contemporary of Robert Trent Jones, Wilson was renowned for being an innovative designer, but he also suffered from severe alcoholism and died in 1965.  His most famous hole is The Blue Monster's par-4 18th, which has played as the PGA Tour's toughest hole two of the last five years.

THE FLORIDA SWING: It's almost impossible to believe that The PGA Tour didn't actually stage an event in Florida until the The Doral Open Invitational of 1962.

PRETTY-BOY-FLOYD: Raymond Floyd was responsible for the overhaul of the golf courses at Doral in 1993. The resort now has five championship courses, including the TPC Blue Monster, home to the WGC-CA Championship

NORMAN CONQUEST: The Greg Norman signature course, The Great White, features 237 bunkers and a 25,000 square triple green, which has the 11th, 13th and 17th holes.

FANCY PANTS: Phil Mickelson won the 2009 CA Championship, but that year's tournament is almost better known for Henrik Stenson deciding to play a shot along the water's edge on the third hole in just his underwear. The fashion-conscious Swede didn't want to get his clothes dirty. He missed the cut, by the way.

The 2010 WGC CA Championship at TPC Blue Monster at Doral takes place on March 11-14.
