A quick news refresher from the past week in golf

Tiger Woods

ANOTHER TIGER FEAT HEADLINE...?!
...'Fraid so. Did you hear mutterings that there may have been more golf fans at the 2009 Open Championship on Friday to see Tiger miss the cut than were in attendance on the weekend to see the world's greatest golf tournament reach its climax? The news from US broadcaster CBS (see the full story here) just makes you realise the man's box-office allure.

OSKAR WINNER
There are some people who believe The European Tour is chocker with anonymous Scandinavian golfers. Oddly enough, Nicky Wire, bassist of the Manic Street Preachers is one of them. Consider the case Oskar Henningsson, though, winner of the 2009 Moravia Silesia Open, and just the third player in tour history to win in his first season after qualifying for the tour (see here). The others? Jose Maria Olazabal and Gordon Brand Jr.

FUNKY DAYS ARE BACK AGAIN
I doubt very much that Fred Funk, winner of the 2009 US Senior Open, is a big fan of the Leicester indie band Cornershop, who we borrowed the above headline from. Then again he might be - David 'Bumble' Lloyd likes The Fall, so anything's possible. I digress, which does a disservice to the significant achievements of the golfer with a degree in law enforcement. Read more here.

A CUT'N'SHUT JOB
Buick can't get out of PGA Tour golf fast enough, it would seem. The US car manufacturer general Motors was once the sponsor of five events on tour and its endorsement of 2009 Buick Open winner Tiger Woods was cancelled a year early in 2008. See the full story here.

HURRICANE CATRIONA
Catriona Matthew won the 2009 Women's British Open at Royal Lytham just 10 weeks after giving birth to her second child (see story here). The minimum period of statutory maternity leave for a woman is just two weeks - four if the mother work in a factory. Can anyone explain what Matthew was doing wasting the intervening six weeks before going back to work? Just kidding...

CHIP AHOY!
Fancy winning two flight tickets courtesy of our partners Virgin Atlantic? All you need to do is head the leaderboard of our Power Chip game. As of posting, you've only got Marshall Lawson and some Beavis & Butthead fans to beat. So what are you waiting for - click here!

DUBAI DESERT CLASSIC
You'd think we were contractually obliged to write this weekly fawning baloney about Lawrence Donegan's excellent blog. But no, like Sir Michael Bonallack and many great amateurs before him, we do it for the love of the game. Read his piece about the latest European Tour sponsorship shenanigans here.

BOOTH? YOU CAN'T HANDLE THE BOOTH!
Following in the footsteps of his 15 year-old sister Carly, who qualified to play in the Curtis Cup of 2008, congratulations to her brother Wallace has made the GB & Ire Walker Cup squad to play the United States in Pensylvania on September 12-13.

YOUR DALY FIX
The Golf Channel just can't get enough of John Daly reality TV programmes. Following the Daly Planet in 2006, there will be a second series broadcast in 2010 (see story here). Expect talk of divorce battles, booze and cigarettes, with the added bonus of the miracle of Daly's weight loss thanks to his gastric belt.
