What a golfer Walter Hagen was. And what a character too. The writer Grantland Rice memorably described him as having “More colour than a lawn full of peacocks.” Michael K Bohn´s piece in The St Louis Post-Dispatch (an excerpt from his book Heroes & Ballyhoo) offers an interesting insight into the life of golf´s first celebrity professional. Although he was a committed party animal, he would occasionally have an early night then turn up at the course and dab whisky on his clothing to unsettle his playing partner. Maybe that´s a tactic Tiger Woods could adopt if/when he returns to the fray...
