Lee Westwood thinks a fifth major should be formed and held in Asia

World number two Lee Westwood has called on the golfing powers that be to create a fifth major to be held in the Asia-Pacific region, in order to spread the game worldwide. The 38-year old admitted that he “likes the tradition of the majors” but expressed his view that a fifth event is needed “somewhere like Asia or Australia” to spread the main events of the golfing season around the world.

At present there are three tournaments in the United States – the Masters, the US Open and the PGA Championship – and one in the United Kingdom, The Open.

Westwood will be playing in the only competition held in Asia that is viewed as a truly ‘world class’ tournament at the WGC-HSBC Champions event in Shanghai next month, an event added to the World Golf Championships in 2009 – the first WGC event held outside the United States since 2006.

Westwood said in his interview that “The World Golf Championships should be moved around the world, encapsulating everyone because it’s in the title of the tournament. China’s an emerging market for golf with so many people taking up the sport. The more tournaments that are played there, the more interest there will be.

“I see the way that the Asian economy and markets have supported golf over the last few years and they deserve to have big tournaments there. Europe and America have been nailed really, financially, so Asia is going to be more healthy, with sponsors more likely to want to put money into sporting events there because they’ve got it.”

The Ladies game is already thriving with Asian competitors, most of them currently dominate the rankings, so Westwood could be on to something with his suggestion. There is certainly more money out there than in Europe and America, and it can only benefit the game to spread the very best tournaments around the world, similarly to World Cups.
