American Ryder Cup member Bubba Watson held off stiff competition from compatriot Webb Simpson to claim the Zurich Classic in New Orleans, after a play-off.

The two were tied for the lead overnight, and both carded final round 69s to finish 15 under, and two shots clear of the chasing pack, which included Korea's KJ Choi. England's Luke Donald was the best placed British player, finishing with a final round 69 to finish tied for eighth on 10 under par.

Watson and Simpson seemed to match each other right through the final round, with both players making eagles on the par 5 second, before Watson double bogeyed the ninth hole after finding the water. Simpson went three strokes clear at the next hole with a birdie, but bogeyed the twelfth and Watson closed the gap again on the thirteenth with a birdie.

Simpson was penalized a stroke on the fifteenth after the wind moved his ball after he had grounded his putter, leaving the match all square.

Watson had a chance to win the match at the final hole, but missed his putt, forcing a play-off.

Both players birdied the first hole, but when Simpson missed his birdie putt on the second, Watson had the chance to seal victory and duly obliged from 4-feet.

The world number 16 said afterwards "A year ago I was a good player who had never won a competition. All of a sudden I've got three under my belt so it's crazy. It's something I could never dream of."

Simpson, ranked 98th in the world, said, "I hit some good shots and gave myself a chance, but I just came up a little short. Bubba's a great friend and a great champion, I'm happy for him.

FINAL ROUND LEADERBOARD: 1 Watson (USA) -16 (after play-off), 2 Simpson (USA) -15, =3 Choi (KOR), Dufner (USA), Gainey (USA) -13, =6 Jones (Aus), McNeill (USA) -12, =8 Chalmers (Aus), Donald (Eng), Mathis (USA), Mayfair (USA), Romero (Arg) -10
