United States Win 24th World Cup

Final round heroics guide US to glory

The American pair of Matt Kuchar and Gary Woodland secured the World Cup

Six birdies in the final round from the American pair of Matt Kuchar and Gary Woodland ensured that the USA won their 24th World Cup of Golf at Mission Hills in China, giving them a two-shot victory over their closest challengers.

The Americans fought back from two shots behind the overnight leaders, Ireland, represented by Graeme McDowell and Rory McIlroy, and had wiped out that lead by the time they walked off the second hole. Four more birdies followed to take them to 24-under par and a final round 67 to win the title.

England finished tied for second thanks to a 9-under par 63 in the final round from Ian Poulter and Justin Rose, as they finished alongside Germany on 22-under. Australia, Scotland, the Netherlands and Ireland tied for third a further shot back.

There was nothing flash or extravagant from the Americans, which you may expect, instead they played simple, solid, and effective golf throughout, working their way through the field and up the leaderboard. The only blemish on their final round came at the par-3 11th, which was bogeyed, but two birdies followed immediately after to restore the lead.

The win for America was their first since 2000, when Tiger Woods and David Duval cruised to victory, and Kuchar was delighted to end that baron run. “You think of sporting events, and you think of all the teams that become world champions, and in golf there are not that many opportunities,” he said. “To represent the United States and to become world champions just feels great.”
