Scottish Pair Focussed On The Future

Gallacher to partner Laird in World Cup

Martin Laird will lead the Scottish team

As the highest-ranked Scotsman, Martin Laird was able to choose his teammate for the World Cup at Mission Hills in November, and he has gone for a man with ambitions as high as his own.

Stephen Gallacher was given the position in the Scottish team for the event in China and he will be using the competition to springboard himself into the thoughts of the man given the job of leading Europe into battle with the Americans in 2014 at the Ryder Cup.

Gallacher has admitted that while it is “a great honour” to represent his country, “the Ryder Cup would be the ultimate goal really, watching my uncle Bernard playing or captaining, it’s in the Gallacher tradition, and it’s in Scotland as well.”

Despite the obvious ambitions to make the European Ryder Cup team, the newest member of the Scottish team is still fully focussed on the task at hand at Mission Hills, telling the gathered press at the team announcement that “We want to carry on the tradition of Colin (Montgomerie) and Marc (Warren) doing well, and we should complement each other – Martin hits a fade and I have a slight draw, we’re both good ball strikers and I’ll leave him the putts.”

While Laird has competed in the World Cup before, it is Gallacher’s first appearance, but he has competed at the top level previously, at the Walker Cup, and he will be hoping his performances at the Johnnie Walker Championship – ironically at Gleneagles this week, the home of the 2014 Ryder Cup – are just the start of a run of form that sees him introduced to the drama of the Ryder Cup.
