Scottish Open Champ Hoping To Make History

Donald could become first British double winner

Donald could make his own little piece of history this week

World number one and newly crowned Scottish Open winner Luke Donald moves on to Royal St George’s looking to not only win the Open for the first time in his career, but make a little bit of history along the way. Donald could become the first player to win the Open Championship having won the Scottish Open a week before.

Donald is already bringing one record to an end, of 18 years without the world number one at the time of the Open being from England. The last man to occupy the top spot at this time was Sir Nick Faldo, back in 1983.

Donald’s victory sent a clear message to the rest of the field at Sandwich at the end of the week – beware – because Donald was in supreme form at the Castle Stuart Golf Links in Inverness, and although several key players were not involved in the event, such as Rory McIlroy, five of the top nine players were, which makes the achievement hit home for those guys a lot more.

This win adds to the two Donald has already racked up in 2011 in Europe, having beaten world number two and fellow Englishman Lee Westwood at Wentworth in the BMW PGA Championship back in May and the WGC-Accenture Match Play Championship in February, holding off the challenge of Martin Kaymer.

If Donald does become the first to win the two tournaments in the space of a week, he will also become the first Brit to win the Open since Paul Lawrie’s victory back in 1999 at Carnoustie, and the first Englishman since Faldo’s triumph at Muirfield in 1992.
