PowerPlay Golf Raises Huge Sum For Help For Heroes

New event raises 10k for soldiers

PowerPlay Golf is looking like a hit even after one event

Celtic Manor Resort in south Wales hosted the very first PowerPlay Golf event, the innovative new nine-hole tournament that aims to attract similar audiences both live and on television as Twenty20 cricket by being a shorter, all-action version of the game.

The event, deemed a success by players, organisers and officials, saw a number of soldiers being involved in the event as flag bearers, and to thank the soldiers for their help, organisers donated £10,000 to Help for Heroes. Peter McEvoy, Executive Director of the short form of the sport, presented the cheque to Company Sergeant Major Scotty McQuillin, a member of the Royal Regiment of Scotland for the past 17 years.

"The job the Armed Forces do for this country is truly remarkable so we are delighted to be able to support such a worthy cause. It was great to get Scott and the soldiers so involved in the event and they seemed to really enjoy the experience," said McEvoy.

In total, the event at Celtic Manor raised over £65,000 for various charities, with the three official charities of the Ignition event – Help for Heroes, The British Lung Foundation and Leukaemia and Lymphoma Research – all receiving £10,000.

In addition to the money raised by the tournament as a whole, each player nominated a personal charity, for which PowerPlay Golf donated £35,000, the equivalent of 10% of each player’s prize money, to the twelve nominated charities.

The event was won by Caroline Hedwall, and following the success of the first event, organisers are planning to take the innovative new version of golf to North America and Asia later this year as they hope to reach another part of the wide market. Just like at Celtic Manor, the events will feature twelve competitors, both male and female, and of all ages and experience, and more charities will hopefully be able to benefit from the sure-fire success of the short game.
