McIlroy Reaches Career High Ranking

US Open champion reaches number two in the world

Posted Nov 11, 2011 by Chris White

Rory McIlroy is now second in the world rankings

Having won the 2011 US Open and finished fourth at the WGC HSBC Champions event in Shanghai last week, Rory McIlroy has risen to a career-high ranking of second in the world. With most rankings settled on overall performance, McIlroy managed to move up to second thanks to one particular shot in China.

McIlroy birdied the final hole, but had he parred or worse, he would have maintained his third-placed ranking, as he would have finished in a four-way tie for sixth, which would have resulted in him staying behind Lee Westwood, the man he has bumped into third.

Martin Kaymer’s victory in Shanghai lifted the German back to number four in the world, the position he spent most of the year in before dropping away, while Tiger Woods, who has the eyes of the world on him again at this week’s Australian Open, begins the competition in 58th.

Kaymer’s victory, along with moving to fourth in the world, moves him to second in the European Tour Race to Dubai money list, ahead of McIlroy, but just behind world number one Luke Donald. He has now earned €2,830,264 this year, while Donald is well clear, having won €3,856,394 as the Dubai World Championship draws closer.

Latest World Rankings:

1 Luke Donald (England), 2 Rory McIlroy (Northern Ireland), 3 Lee Westwood (England), 4 Martin Kaymer (Germany), 5 Dustin Johnson (USA), 6 Steve Stricker (USA), 7 Jason Day (Australia), 8 Adam Scott (Australia), 9 Matt Kuchar (USA), 10 Webb Simpson (USA).
