Maiden European Tour Victory for Slattery

Slattery hangs on to win in Madrid

Lee Slattery won his first European Tour title in Madrid

Despite a late wobble, Englishman Lee Slattery held on to his lead to win his first European Tour title at the Madrid Masters, beating Lorenzo Gagli by one stroke, after going onto the 18th tee with a three shot advantage thanks to a storming performance on the back nine.

The 33-year old from Southport found the sand and then the water on the final hole, crawling across the victory line with a double-bogey seven to edge out his Italian opponent, with Gagli missing a 30-foot birdie putt that would have sent the pair into a playoff.

That miss left Slattery, who lost his Tour card in 2007, with two putts from 15-feet to wrap up his first victory on the Tour in his 183rd appearance. He started the day with a two shot lead but bogeyed both the third and fifth, with Cesar Monasterio of Argentina taking the lead for most of the day before finishing three shots off the lead on 12-under.

When Slattery birdied the seventh, which seemed to kick-start his final round, with birdies on 11, 13, 14 and 15, helping him pull clear before the nightmare that was the 18th. He told the media afterwards that he had “never shaken over a two-foot putt so much”, with his second shot ending up in a fairway bunker making things much harder.

World number one Luke Donald briefly challenged for the lead but fell away towards the end of his final round, ending up tied for eleventh after dropping three strokes late on.
