Kaymer Splits From Caddie Connelly

Connelly given the boot as Kaymer drops to world number three

Kaymer will have his brother as caddie at the World Match Play

World number three Martin Kaymer has vented his frustration at dropping below Luke Donald in the world rankings and missing the cut at the Masters once again, by splitting from his caddie Craig Connelly.

Little more than three months after the German reached the dizzy heights of world number one; Kaymer has decided that it’s time for a change, with his brother taking over for the immediate future, starting with this week’s Volvo World Matchplay tournament in Spain. As well as carrying the bag when Kaymer reached number one, Connelly was also there when the 26-year old won the US PGA Championship last year.
Kaymer says "I’ve had a fantastic year with Craig, winning the PGA & the Race to Dubai. He’s a good caddie and a really nice guy, but I just felt it was time for a change.”

Luke Donald replaced Kaymer at number two last week, but there are enough points on offer at this week’s Matchplay competition to take Kaymer, or Donald, above Westwood in the rankings if they win it.

The German says that he has been thinking about splitting from Connelly for a while now. Really? Because he was number one in the world just 12 weeks ago! Was he going to split from him then? I sincerely doubt it. He’s not going to say that it’s all his own fault, and just as in football with managers and tennis with coaches, in golf it’s the caddie who takes the blame. He’s dropped to number two in the world because of how Westwood and Donald are playing, not because Connelly was giving him poor advice.

That said, there will be plenty of people who will want to work with Kaymer – he is still the number three in the world remember – but expect a P45 coming through the door if he drops to number four!
