Garcia Back in Top 20 with Andalucia Win

Back-to-back victories for in-form Spaniard

Posted Oct 31, 2011 by Chris White

Sergio Garcia has won two titles in a week

Faced by the not so simple task of back-to-back victories to qualify for the HSBC WGC-Champions event in Shanghai this week, Sergio Garcia pulled the feat out of the bag at the Andalucía Masters, but has declined a place on the tee in China to rest.

The victory followed the Spaniard’s 11-shot win at the Castello Masters last week, and moves him back into the world’s top 20 after a shaky start. Garcia started two shots clear of fellow-Spaniard Miguel Angel Jimenez, but carded a final round par-71, while Jimenez finished one shot back at five under after a final round 70 at Valderrama.

Garcia hit two bogeys in the first seven holes, allowing Jimenez to top the leader board, but he recovered to lead by three with three holes remaining. Birdies on 16 and 17 from Jimenez put the pressure on Garcia, but he completed a tricky chip and four-foot putt on the final green to finish 6-under for the competition.

Garcia, who earned a place at the season ending WGC-Champions event in China with the win, was overwhelmed with his performances in the past couple of weeks, describing them as simply “amazing.”

However, the Spaniard won’t be travelling out to Shanghai for the competition, choosing to rest instead after a hectic schedule in recent weeks, and joins Luke Donald on the sidelines, who has also withdrawn due to the imminent birth of his second child.

American Jim Furyk will take Garcia’s place at the competition.
