Focus On: Luke Donald

The current world number one

Luke Donald is currently world number one

Many golfers grow up playing on their local courses, maybe venturing to a few tournaments here or there, but not all. Some players move away, or even abroad, to give themselves the best chances of becoming a tour professional, which is what this week’s ‘Focus On’ player did.

Current world number one Luke Donald joined College Prospects of America, who created a CV for him and sent it to the universities around the country, with Donald being offered a position with Stanford University’s golf team, but not the university itself. Instead, Donald chose to study art theory and practice at Northwestern University in 1997, winning several tournaments along the way.

Donald turned professional in 2001 and won his first PGA Tour title at the Southern Farm Bureau Classic the following year. He then added the Omega European Masters and Scandinavian Masters titles in 2004, and was part of the victorious European Ryder Cup team. On top of these wins, Donald teamed up with Paul Casey to win the WGC World Cup for England.

2006 saw him break into the world top ten for the first time, courtesy of a win at the Honda Classic, and followed that up in 2007, finishing the year as the world number seven.

He has continued his progression ever since, but his biggest win to date came in February of this year at the WGC Accenture Match Play Championship, beating Martin Kaymer 3&2 in the final. That form has continued throughout 2011, seeing him rise to the world number one ranking when he defeated Lee Westwood at the BMW PGA Championship at Wentworth in May. This was his fifth European Tour title and he was in imperious form throughout the competition, culminating in the win against the then world number one in Westwood, becoming only the third Englishman to reach the top of the rankings.
