Family Affair for Gallacher

Scotsman dreaming of a Ryder Cup place

Stephen hopes to follow in the footsteps of his uncle Bernard

We’ve all been in that situation where we’ve wanted to follow in the footsteps of family members, whether it is in the job you choose or the car you drive, or even the beer you drink, but the Gallacher family is slightly different.

One of the most famous golfing families, Bernard Gallacher represented Europe on eight occasions in Ryder Cups and captained the team on three occasions and now his nephew could be in the running for a place at the 2012 competition.

Stephen Gallacher is currently ranked at number 96 in the world and is due to represent Scotland in the forthcoming Omega Mission Hills World Cup in China alongside Martin Laird, but the 36-year old still says that his main ambition in the sport is to play in the Ryder Cup, especially with the 2014 tournament coming to Scotland.

Gallacher was in contention at the European Masters last weekend going into the final day on 10-under par but he had a disappointing final round, carding a 72 to finish one under. To be in consideration for Jose Maria Olazabal’s squad for the 2012 competition, Gallacher needs to turn these positions into victories, something he has struggled to do since joining the European Tour 15 years ago.

In that time he has played in two US Opens but has failed to take part in the US Masters. He has started to improve in recent times, making the cut in the Open and the PGA Championship but the wins are still evading him, something he must put right if he is to fulfil the ambitions of following in his uncle’s footsteps.
