Tough competition for places according to Olazabal

Colin Montgomerie captained Europe to victory in 2010

The first round of qualification events for the 2012 Ryder Cup get underway this week with the Omega European Masters at Crans-sur-Sierre, with six members of the victorious European team from 2010 taking part.

The ten automatic places in the team at Medinah Country Club will be decided on the top five in the world rankings, plus the next top five players on the European Tour’s points list, with the remaining two captain’s picks being chosen by first-time captain Jose Maria Olazabal, who believes it is going to be harder than ever this year to get into the team.

‘Olly’ said that “The players will have to play really well to make it and I am sure they are preparing themselves to peak at the right times so we have the best chance to win.”

For Luke Donald, Graeme McDowell, Ian Poulter and Padraig Harrington will all get the chance to get their qualification campaigns off to a good start with the latest round of the FedEx Cup playoffs in Boston.

For the likes of Lee Westwood, Rory McIlroy and Martin Kaymer, however, it’s a trip to the Alps for the European Masters starting on Thursday.

The 2012 Ryder Cup tournament will be between the 25th and 30th September 2012.
