Dyson to Call on Asian Experience

Former Asian Tour member confident ahead of return to China

Simon Dyson is to call on his Asian Tour success to help this week

English golfer Simon Dyson believes his early professional days playing on the Asian Tour could stand him in good stead at this week’s WGC-HSBC Champions event in Shanghai. The 33-year old was struggling to earn a European Tour card back in 2000, so tried his hand on the Asian Tour and it turned out to be a move that kick started his career.

Dyson won three events and the Asian Order of Merit, and feels that the success in the continent has helped him become the player he is today. “Every time I come this way, I feel as though I’m going to play well. I don’t want this to sound big-headed, I just have this feeling that everyone else knows.”

Dyson has gone on to become one of the established members of the European Tour since the early days in Asia, and has travelled to the Champions’ Event in Shanghai full of optimism and the belief that he can challenge the star-studded field, which includes all four of this year’s major winners – Charl Schwartzel (the Masters), Rory McIlroy (the US Open), Darren Clarke (the Open Championship) and Keegan Bradley (PGA Championship).

World number one Luke Donald, and the in-form Sergio Garcia – who has won two events in as many weeks – have withdrawn from the competition, giving Dyson more hope of victory. He will be looking to make it three titles in the year, after winning the Irish Open and KLM Open titles, and has maintained his form ever since he received a letter from Arnold Palmer, praising his performance in Ireland.
