Donald Targeting Top Two Finish

Trans-Atlantic dreams hinge on final PGA Tour event

Luke Donald is aiming for a top 2 finish

World number one Luke Donald needs a top-two finish in the final PGA Tour event of the 2011 season to keep his dream of becoming the first player to top the money lists on both sides of the Atlantic in the same season, but he faces an uphill task in that quest, courtesy of Webb Simpson.

The American now leads the race in the States by more than $363,000 (£29,000), after finishing second in Georgia over the weekend. It could have been even more difficult for Donald, however, had Simpson made a four-foot putt in the second play-off hole, going on to lose to Ben Crane.

Simpson, in just his third season as a professional on the PGA Tour, has certainly made things harder for Donald, turning up the pressure on the Englishman if he is to seal that first place on the money list, but the form he’s been in this season, you wouldn’t bet against him.

Donald has been down and out of a number of events at times, but bounced back to becoming a serious contender. His problem this year has been finding a consistent start to his competitions, if he can do that at the Children’s Miracle Network Hospitals Classic in Florida this week, then he’ll be in with a great chance of securing that first place on the money list.

Donald is more than £1million clear of second-placed Rory McIlroy in the European Race to Dubai, but unlike in America, the European Tour still has two months remaining in the season.
