Africa Open kicks off the 2012 European Tour

Organisers of the European Tour have announced the schedule for the first six months of the 2012 campaign, starting with the Africa Open on 5th January. The Joburg follows soon after before the second staging of the Volvo Golf Champions event.

The €2million event will begin on 19th January with each European Tour winner of 2011, plus all players under 50 who have totalled ten or more career victories on the Tour creating a real Champions event.

In addition to the exciting Volvo Champions, there are two new venues for the players to experience in 2012, the first of which is the Volvo China Open, held at the Binhai Lake Golf Club, located in Tianjin, while the Sicilian Open also debuts on the European Tour at the Verdura Golf and Spa Resort in Sciacca, Sicily.

The most significant change of date in comparison to the 2011 schedule is the Nordea Masters in Stockholm moving from it’s traditional position on the calendar in July, immediately after the Open, to 6th June in order to give players taking part in the US Open in San Francisco an extra day to travel over to Sweden.

The Open de Espana returns to Seville, while the 20th edition of the Madeira Islands Open returns to Santo da Serra Golf Club. The Trophee Hassan II changes format for 2012, turning into a four-round strokeplay tournament as opposed to its Pro-Am competition, with 126 players taking part at the Golf Du Palais Royal in Morocco.

The focus of the golfing world will switch to Wentworth on 24th May as the €4.5million BMW PGA Championship gets under way with current world number one Luke Donald hoping to retain his title.
